How To Succeed In A Video Interview

If you’ve been professionally employed for a few years, you would have noticed that things have changed around you and hiring is not the way it used to be. With more and more employers looking at options of effective remote work or work from home as we know it, video interview has become a norm during the selection process. It’s a challenge that many of us face to express our personality through an online mode of communication. This has become one of the primary reasons why good candidates fail to secure a job which they would have in a face-to-face interview.

Though the concept isn’t new, they are here to stay and as a job seeker, it is important that you train yourself on the skills needed to ace in a video interview. We’ve listed some of the important aspects that will help you get there.

It's no different from an in-person discussion:

The amount of readiness from your end should be the same as you going for an in-person discussion. Dress as you would for a direct interview and stay focused. In addition to this, ensure that there are no distractions on the desk you would be using to take the interviews. Check and recheck the microphone and camera on your laptop / PC.

Shift your thought process:

A lot of your confidence could be communicated to the person on the other side when you are available in person, now you need to look at compensating it through the camera. Eye contact, smile and mannerisms can be used to compensate this and convey the same warmth that you would have in person.

Stay comfortable:

We’ve seen a lot of them get stiff or conscious while in front of the camera. This is one of the parameters that the employer would look for because in the present scenario, most roles would involve you being in front of the camera. Be it doing client presentations or addressing team meetings. It is important that you are able to communicate to the employer that you are good at it.

Build content:

Long pauses are a turn-off during video interviews. Unless you structure out your opening statement which includes your introduction and your pitch, there are going to be a few of these pauses. Apart from having a strong opening statement, it will work in your favor if you have an amazing closing statement which stays on their mind. Everybody remembers the start and the end and not so much of the discussion in between. Use the opening and closing to your advantage.

Find the perfect space:

Lock yourself in a wardrobe if you have to! Kids or pets around, the juicer running in the kitchen, the television set or the traffic outside, all these will distract the interviewer from what you are trying your best to communicate. At your end too, you will lose focus and the direction. Ensure that you pick a space where you are away from all these distractions.

These tips are sure to set the right tone to get that interview completed in a confident manner. However, if you have a good resume, it does half the work for you and that is what we do.
